Nutella Puff Pastry Trees (Printable Version)

Flaky puff pastry filled with Nutella, shaped like festive trees and baked to golden perfection.

# What You'll Need:

→ Pastry

01 - 2 sheets puff pastry (8.8 oz each), thawed if frozen

→ Filling

02 - 4.2 oz Nutella or chocolate-hazelnut spread

→ Finish

03 - 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
04 - 1 tbsp powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

# Steps to Follow:

01 - Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
02 - Unroll both sheets of puff pastry. Evenly spread Nutella over one sheet, leaving a 3/8-inch border around the edges.
03 - Place the second pastry sheet on top, pressing gently to sandwich the Nutella.
04 - Using a sharp knife or a tree-shaped cookie cutter, cut out tree shapes approximately 5–6 inches tall. Re-roll scraps to cut additional trees if desired.
05 - Transfer trees to the prepared tray. Carefully make horizontal cuts along each side to form branches, keeping the central trunk intact. Gently twist each branch for a decorative effect.
06 - Brush each tree with the beaten egg to enhance browning.
07 - Bake for 16 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
08 - Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature.

# Additional Tips::

01 -
  • The contrast between shattering crisp pastry and velvety smooth chocolate filling creates something magical in every bite
  • These look impressive but come together in under 40 minutes even if you have never worked with puff pastry before
  • The twisted branches make each tree unique like little edible sculptures that people cannot stop admiring
02 -
  • Do not skip chilling the pastry sheets before cutting because warm dough loses its ability to puff and you will end up with flat dense trees
  • The Nutella should be cold not room temperature or it will seep out the sides during baking and create a sticky mess on your parchment
  • Twist the branches in the same direction on each tree for a uniform look or alternate directions for more whimsical playful appearance
03 -
  • Use a ruler or template for your first few trees until you develop an eye for consistent sizing and proportion
  • Chill the assembled trees for 15 minutes before baking if your kitchen is warm to help them hold their shape perfectly
  • Work quickly once the pastry comes out of the refrigerator because butter layers start separating at room temperature
